Submitting to the Dirty Show

Posted in Journal with tags , , , , on October 17, 2011 by razor

Dirty Show LogoI am having a really good day.  I am very excited because I have decided to enter some photographs into this coming year’s Dirty Show.  I went to the show two years ago in Los Angeles and really enjoyed it.  This year I want to participate.  That is really one great thing that I learned from Gregg – this is an age of participating and not spectating!

I have a photographer lined up (although he is being kind of a creeper).  We met this past Sunday to talk about the project, and we are shooting some pictures this coming Sunday.  And today I spoke with Mo from Lastleaf Printing to talk about silk screeening some of the photos.

So – I have the evening to myself – no homework, no guests, not going out.  I haven’t had a free night in a while.  I am at peace.  I am going to spend the evening reading, cleaning, and water coloring!

Free Time!

I am so psyched!  I finished my case brief much earlier than I expected.  I thought that I would be working on it right up to the last minute, but I have finished it with some 6 hours to spare.  I feel like I just won the lottery, and 5 hours was the prize.

I feel like today has been a very relaxed day.  I worked on my case brief until about lunch time.  I then went to Barnes and Noble and met Al.  The Dirty Show is now accepting submission for their art show in February – so I sent out my own call on FB to see if any of my friends wanted to collaborate on a project.  Bryton and I are going to work on something together.  Brian had also said he wanted to do some photography.  We’ll see what comes out of that.  Since I don’t really have an artistic skill – such as painting, drawing, photography – I want to try to enter a collage.  I bought a book at Barnes and Noble about collage.  I’m excited about the possibilities.

I had planned to tell Al that I don’t want to lead him on, and that I am interested in nothing more but a friendship with him – but throughout our time together – it never felt right to say anything.  On my drive home from spending time with him I thought that is one really great thing about not being in a relationship with Mike right now.  It was one of the things I really disliked in our relationship – everytime I would try to hang out with someone as just a friend – if they hit on me – he would want me to say something to them right away.  It was never enough that I would tell him that it wasn’t right to do it at any point that had come it yet.  He didn’t trust my judgement, and would not let me handle things in the way that I felt comfortable with – and he would just make the biggest deals out of nothing.  It was never something that was worth breaking up with him over (obviously – I never did) – but it is nice to be away from those outer restraints now.

I had a really good time, as usual, with Al.  We started off at Barnes and Noble, then went to the Daily Grind for lunch.  After lunch we went to Bvant Garde – a new artist’s studio here in Pueblo.  They have art shows once a month.  They have some really cool stuff in there – and I am glad I know about it now.  I can go to their art shows once a month.  Pueblo is moving up in the World (now just to make some strides in music would be really nice!)

Then we went into a little boutique.  I bought a new pair of red shoes, some jeans, a belt, a top – and an awesome hat.  Al helped me pick it out, and I think I look really cool/sexy in it. (Maybe I’ll wear it to the drag show tomorrow night.)

I went to the Robot boutique that Samantha works at afterwards – but she wasn’t there.

My sister invited me out – and I bummed that I couldn’t go because I had to finish up my case brief, and I am taking Susie out to dinner tonight to talk about her dog sitting for me at the end of the month.

Ok – now what to do with my few free hours that I have opened up – running?  collage?  reading?  Oh – the possibilities!

The Dirty Show Experience – Glenn Barr, Internationally Renowned Detroit Artist/Dirty Show Veteran

Posted in Art Exhibits, Paintings with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on November 20, 2009 by razor

The largest painting in room 139 was done by Glenn Barr – the same painting from which the Dirty Show 10 poster was pressed. Glenn Barr and the Dirty Show are no strangers to eachother – Barr has graced the walls of the Dirty Show since the show’s creation in 2000, and has been greatly involved in the show’s production. Barr is a renowned Detroit artist. His art has the flavor of Woodstock hippies taking a trip into the future, or maybe vice versa:

Glenn Barr’s robots, creatures and vixens live in a seedy yet swinging 1960′s universe, drenched in the haze of a post industrial hangover. Working out of the burgeoning lowbrow movement in Detroit, Barr uses elements of pop culture to infuse familiarity to an otherwise parallel reality, where angels and devils alike share the same urban playground. With a nod to pulp art and cartooning, Barr’s paintings are mesmerizing in both their simplicity and depth. (Artist’s Bio, glbarr.com)

While browsing through his gallery, many of his works really captured me. “Happiness,” an acrylic on masonite, depicts a fairy with broken wings sitting on a pill bottle and leaning against a syringe. This was released as a Bronze at the artist’s most recent solo exhibition at the 323 East Gallery in Detroit. The Bronze was sculpted by Dave Grazzo and produced by Andevan Bronzeworks.  It is limited to 15 pieces.  Any of the last three that are still available can be purchased for a mere $3500 from 323 East.

Other pieces that absolutely drew me in are included below.  Enjoy!

The Dirty Show Experience – New Meaning to the Term “Blow Job”

Cockaine by Jeremy MF Thompson

I‘m still in the first room, room 139, and on the wall is a framed photograph. In the photo there is a leave-it-to-beaver looking male – gazing up as if viewing a legion of angels! And in front of this awe struck face – a large penis with a neat white line on the top just begging to be snorted. This was one of the few Jeremy MF Thompson photographs on display at the Dirty Show.

Thompson remarked on some reactions to this piece during the Dirty Show and how this photo originated for him:

“When I walked into room 139, I saw two dudes staring at my ‘Cockcaine’ piece. One looked at the other and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to do that.’ I wanted to tell them, ‘ME TOO! ME TOO! That’s why I took the picture!’… but I didn’t. I like being a fly on the wall in group shows.

The idea for that picture came from seeing RoboCop when I was a little kid. There’s a scene where one of the villains is snorting coke off some hooker’s tits and I can clearly remember thinking, ‘I don’t know what that is but I want to do that!’ Years later, thanks to San Francisco, I found out exactly what that mysterious white powder was and why the idea of doing it off of someone was so appealing. I wanted someone to suck up some coke off of my own cock but getting that photo would be pretty difficult so I got myself a stud with a stunt cock. Originally I wanted two dicks, mushroom to mushroom, with a guy sucking cock off of one and a girl (my fiancée) snorting coke off the other but I decided one cock and one user would be dirtier. Choosing a male to do the line just seemed right at the time.”

Thompson’s art takes on a Let’s-not-take-anything-too-serious-folks attitude, and he says, “There’s not much to take seriously when it comes to sex or art except, of course, in the execution, and even then if it’s not fun it’s not worth doing.”

As for “Cockaine” the photograph that graced the wall of room 139 at the Dirty Show Motel – it sold – and will grace the wall of another. However, I am hoping to see more of his work at the Dirty Show 11 in Detroit. Until then – here are a few more Jeremy MF Thompson photographs. Enjoy!

The Dirty Show Experience – Fruit Loops

Fruit Loops by Lisa Boyle

Passing through the roughly cut pieces of black cloth hanging as a makeshift door into the first room – we were very cheerfully greeted by Chloe – a suicide girl. She was very friendly and out going – so I was shocked to later read on her suicide profile that she is an introvert. Hmmmm – must have caught her on an off night because she was definitely friendly.

One of the first photographs on the wall that caught my eye was a bright colored photograph of a woman bathing in Fruit Loops. The dark skin of the model contrasted well with the pure white of the milk. Each little bright colored ring of cereal played in the milk like a little inner-tube waiting for a passenger to take a ride in the ocean of milk. There was no face – just the model’s bare breasts.

The little folded placard next to photograph read “Fruit Loops by Lisa Boyle.” Lisa Boyle is a former model – and has appeared in Playboy, Access, and Loaded. She is now the talent behind the camera, and is putting her experience as a model into her art.

I started taking pictures about 7 years ago, after years of being on the other side of the camera, and found that I love it. I think my experience as a model helps me tremendously in being a photographer.

Lisa’s work has been published in magazines such as People, Inked, and Playboy, and she has photographed many celebrities including Ryan O’Neal, Dave Navarro, and Tila Tequila.

When asked for comments about The Dirty Show, Lisa said:

I absolutely LOVED participating in the Dirty Show. When I went to drop off my art, and saw the hotel, I turned to my friend and said… ‘OMG this is SO ME’ I loved the whole vibe, art direction of the show, the models, the way it was layed out and all the cool artists that participated as well… I can’t wait for the next one… I had so many other pieces I wish I had brought…but next time….

Well, we can’t wait for the next dirty show either.  So here are my 5 favorite pieces done by Lisa. Enjoy!

Come with me…

I can’t wait any longer.

hidden deep inside,
I can only look at it when I want it.
It’s dirty… so dirty…

When I arrived at the Dirty Show at around 7:30 this evening, the more than 15 rooms that held over a 150 pieces of erotic art held a sufficient amount of visitors so that one could leisurely view the art with out feeling overcrowded. However, during the two and a half hours it took to make my way through these rooms, visitors began mingling and waiting patiently on the balcony outside of the rooms to wait their turn to view the art it contained. I heard one of the producers surprisingly comment, “We had more people turn out than we expected.” And as I left the show, a long line had already formed in the alley, as many people awaited entrance into the show.

I was not surprised by the large turn out to the Dirty Show. On display were the works of over 45 creative minds. This exclusive two day exhibit should not have been an event that one would pass on.

Some of the pieces that had already sold include:

  • “Cockaine” photo by Jeremy MF Thompson
  • “Parlor Tricks” oil on canvas by Tracee Mae Miller
  • “I’m Ready for My Close Up” Photo by A. Owen Layne
  • “The Last Temptation of Christ” by Marc DeBauch
  • “Pleasure” by Roderick Macdonald
  • “Betty 2″ by Bunny Yeager
  • “Octo-Puss” by DVS

Be sure to check back often in the next week as I post further about the artists and their art featured in the Dirty Show – now, off to the after party at Fetish Nation! Hope to see you there – Enjoy!

Some other artists that had works displayed were: Lisa Boyle, Steve Goedde, Eric Kroll, Christine Kessler, Billy Pacak, Alva Bernadine, bd Miller, Aaron Hawks, Clive Barker, Colin Christian, Frederic Fonteray, Tristan Eaton, Ashley, Juan Martine delCampo Ju, John Horowitz, J.L. The Dirty Show LA – Nov. 13-14

Posted in Art Exhibits, Journal, Paintings, Photographs, Sketches with tags , , , , , , , on November 12, 2009 by razor

Dirty Show LogoWhat an exciting month November is turning out to be!  Of course, this is National Novel Writing Month, but this month will see a ten year tradition branch out. The “Dirty Show” was created by Jerry Vile ten years ago and takes place in the Motor City every Valentine’s Day.  It is an “erotic art” exhibition that has drawn international attention.  This weekend, the “Dirty Show” is making its way to the City of Angels.

The Dirty Show is many things — but it is NOT, and NEVER has been, a pornographic hootenanny or a lame exercise in shock value. Its critics (and they are legion) forget that there is a legitimate difference between porn and the erotic. Porn, at best, is entertainment. Eroticism is enlightenment — an experience that not only reminds us that we are sentient beings, but also beings capable of seeing connections that go beyond mere carnality. (Robert del Valle, Real Detroit Weekly, February 3, 2009)

Among the many artists that will have artwork on display is Gina King, Clive Barker, and Alva Bernadine.

So in this busy month, I am going to leave my desktop keyboard – pack my acer, camera, and a dirty little outfit – and head to Los Angeles – consider it research for my novel!
