The Dirty Show Experience – Glenn Barr, Internationally Renowned Detroit Artist/Dirty Show Veteran

The largest painting in room 139 was done by Glenn Barr – the same painting from which the Dirty Show 10 poster was pressed. Glenn Barr and the Dirty Show are no strangers to eachother – Barr has graced the walls of the Dirty Show since the show’s creation in 2000, and has been greatly involved in the show’s production. Barr is a renowned Detroit artist. His art has the flavor of Woodstock hippies taking a trip into the future, or maybe vice versa:

Glenn Barr’s robots, creatures and vixens live in a seedy yet swinging 1960′s universe, drenched in the haze of a post industrial hangover. Working out of the burgeoning lowbrow movement in Detroit, Barr uses elements of pop culture to infuse familiarity to an otherwise parallel reality, where angels and devils alike share the same urban playground. With a nod to pulp art and cartooning, Barr’s paintings are mesmerizing in both their simplicity and depth. (Artist’s Bio, glbarr.com)

While browsing through his gallery, many of his works really captured me. “Happiness,” an acrylic on masonite, depicts a fairy with broken wings sitting on a pill bottle and leaning against a syringe. This was released as a Bronze at the artist’s most recent solo exhibition at the 323 East Gallery in Detroit. The Bronze was sculpted by Dave Grazzo and produced by Andevan Bronzeworks.  It is limited to 15 pieces.  Any of the last three that are still available can be purchased for a mere $3500 from 323 East.

Other pieces that absolutely drew me in are included below.  Enjoy!

The Dirty Show Experience – New Meaning to the Term “Blow Job”

Cockaine by Jeremy MF Thompson

I‘m still in the first room, room 139, and on the wall is a framed photograph. In the photo there is a leave-it-to-beaver looking male – gazing up as if viewing a legion of angels! And in front of this awe struck face – a large penis with a neat white line on the top just begging to be snorted. This was one of the few Jeremy MF Thompson photographs on display at the Dirty Show.

Thompson remarked on some reactions to this piece during the Dirty Show and how this photo originated for him:

“When I walked into room 139, I saw two dudes staring at my ‘Cockcaine’ piece. One looked at the other and said, ‘I’ve always wanted to do that.’ I wanted to tell them, ‘ME TOO! ME TOO! That’s why I took the picture!’… but I didn’t. I like being a fly on the wall in group shows.

The idea for that picture came from seeing RoboCop when I was a little kid. There’s a scene where one of the villains is snorting coke off some hooker’s tits and I can clearly remember thinking, ‘I don’t know what that is but I want to do that!’ Years later, thanks to San Francisco, I found out exactly what that mysterious white powder was and why the idea of doing it off of someone was so appealing. I wanted someone to suck up some coke off of my own cock but getting that photo would be pretty difficult so I got myself a stud with a stunt cock. Originally I wanted two dicks, mushroom to mushroom, with a guy sucking cock off of one and a girl (my fiancée) snorting coke off the other but I decided one cock and one user would be dirtier. Choosing a male to do the line just seemed right at the time.”

Thompson’s art takes on a Let’s-not-take-anything-too-serious-folks attitude, and he says, “There’s not much to take seriously when it comes to sex or art except, of course, in the execution, and even then if it’s not fun it’s not worth doing.”

As for “Cockaine” the photograph that graced the wall of room 139 at the Dirty Show Motel – it sold – and will grace the wall of another. However, I am hoping to see more of his work at the Dirty Show 11 in Detroit. Until then – here are a few more Jeremy MF Thompson photographs. Enjoy!

The Dirty Show Experience – Fruit Loops

Fruit Loops by Lisa Boyle

Passing through the roughly cut pieces of black cloth hanging as a makeshift door into the first room – we were very cheerfully greeted by Chloe – a suicide girl. She was very friendly and out going – so I was shocked to later read on her suicide profile that she is an introvert. Hmmmm – must have caught her on an off night because she was definitely friendly.

One of the first photographs on the wall that caught my eye was a bright colored photograph of a woman bathing in Fruit Loops. The dark skin of the model contrasted well with the pure white of the milk. Each little bright colored ring of cereal played in the milk like a little inner-tube waiting for a passenger to take a ride in the ocean of milk. There was no face – just the model’s bare breasts.

The little folded placard next to photograph read “Fruit Loops by Lisa Boyle.” Lisa Boyle is a former model – and has appeared in Playboy, Access, and Loaded. She is now the talent behind the camera, and is putting her experience as a model into her art.

I started taking pictures about 7 years ago, after years of being on the other side of the camera, and found that I love it. I think my experience as a model helps me tremendously in being a photographer.

Lisa’s work has been published in magazines such as People, Inked, and Playboy, and she has photographed many celebrities including Ryan O’Neal, Dave Navarro, and Tila Tequila.

When asked for comments about The Dirty Show, Lisa said:

I absolutely LOVED participating in the Dirty Show. When I went to drop off my art, and saw the hotel, I turned to my friend and said… ‘OMG this is SO ME’ I loved the whole vibe, art direction of the show, the models, the way it was layed out and all the cool artists that participated as well… I can’t wait for the next one… I had so many other pieces I wish I had brought…but next time….

Well, we can’t wait for the next dirty show either.  So here are my 5 favorite pieces done by Lisa. Enjoy!

The Dirty Show Experience – The Crack Motel (Come with Me…)

Posted in Art Exhibits, Music, Writing with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 17, 2009 by razor

Come with me…

I can’t wait any longer.

Like a secret pleasure,
hidden deep inside,
I can only look at it when I want it.
It’s dirty… so dirty…
