The Dirty Show Experience – Glenn Barr, Internationally Renowned Detroit Artist/Dirty Show Veteran

The largest painting in room 139 was done by Glenn Barr – the same painting from which the Dirty Show 10 poster was pressed. Glenn Barr and the Dirty Show are no strangers to eachother – Barr has graced the walls of the Dirty Show since the show’s creation in 2000, and has been greatly involved in the show’s production. Barr is a renowned Detroit artist. His art has the flavor of Woodstock hippies taking a trip into the future, or maybe vice versa:

Glenn Barr’s robots, creatures and vixens live in a seedy yet swinging 1960′s universe, drenched in the haze of a post industrial hangover. Working out of the burgeoning lowbrow movement in Detroit, Barr uses elements of pop culture to infuse familiarity to an otherwise parallel reality, where angels and devils alike share the same urban playground. With a nod to pulp art and cartooning, Barr’s paintings are mesmerizing in both their simplicity and depth. (Artist’s Bio, glbarr.com)

While browsing through his gallery, many of his works really captured me. “Happiness,” an acrylic on masonite, depicts a fairy with broken wings sitting on a pill bottle and leaning against a syringe. This was released as a Bronze at the artist’s most recent solo exhibition at the 323 East Gallery in Detroit. The Bronze was sculpted by Dave Grazzo and produced by Andevan Bronzeworks.  It is limited to 15 pieces.  Any of the last three that are still available can be purchased for a mere $3500 from 323 East.

Other pieces that absolutely drew me in are included below.  Enjoy!

Artist Steve Diet Goedde and Chloe of the Suicide Girls

When I arrived at the Dirty Show at around 7:30 this evening, the more than 15 rooms that held over a 150 pieces of erotic art held a sufficient amount of visitors so that one could leisurely view the art with out feeling overcrowded. However, during the two and a half hours it took to make my way through these rooms, visitors began mingling and waiting patiently on the balcony outside of the rooms to wait their turn to view the art it contained. I heard one of the producers surprisingly comment, “We had more people turn out than we expected.” And as I left the show, a long line had already formed in the alley, as many people awaited entrance into the show.

I was not surprised by the large turn out to the Dirty Show. On display were the works of over 45 creative minds. This exclusive two day exhibit should not have been an event that one would pass on.

Some of the pieces that had already sold include:

  • “Cockaine” photo by Jeremy MF Thompson
  • “Parlor Tricks” oil on canvas by Tracee Mae Miller
  • “I’m Ready for My Close Up” Photo by A. Owen Layne
  • “The Last Temptation of Christ” by Marc DeBauch
  • “Pleasure” by Roderick Macdonald
  • “Betty 2″ by Bunny Yeager
  • “Octo-Puss” by DVS

Be sure to check back often in the next week as I post further about the artists and their art featured in the Dirty Show – now, off to the after party at Fetish Nation! Hope to see you there – Enjoy!

Some other artists that had works displayed were: Lisa Boyle, Steve Goedde, Eric Kroll, Christine Kessler, Billy Pacak, Alva Bernadine, bd Miller, Aaron Hawks, Clive Barker, Colin Christian, Frederic Fonteray, Tristan Eaton, Ashley, Juan Martine delCampo Ju, John Horowitz, J.L. The Dirty Show LA – Nov. 13-14

Dirty Show LogoWhat an exciting month November is turning out to be!  Of course, this is National Novel Writing Month, but this month will see a ten year tradition branch out. The “Dirty Show” was created by Jerry Vile ten years ago and takes place in the Motor City every Valentine’s Day.  It is an “erotic art” exhibition that has drawn international attention.  This weekend, the “Dirty Show” is making its way to the City of Angels.

The Dirty Show is many things — but it is NOT, and NEVER has been, a pornographic hootenanny or a lame exercise in shock value. Its critics (and they are legion) forget that there is a legitimate difference between porn and the erotic. Porn, at best, is entertainment. Eroticism is enlightenment — an experience that not only reminds us that we are sentient beings, but also beings capable of seeing connections that go beyond mere carnality. (Robert del Valle, Real Detroit Weekly, February 3, 2009)

Among the many artists that will have artwork on display is Gina King, Clive Barker, and Alva Bernadine.

So in this busy month, I am going to leave my desktop keyboard – pack my acer, camera, and a dirty little outfit – and head to Los Angeles – consider it research for my novel!

New Path by Jason Cianelli

New Path by Jason Cianelli

I look down the road,
Nothing is familiar.
Am I lost?

One foot in front of the other.
Perhaps like a child
I stayed close to home.

But I grew.
The big hill -
now only a small slope.

I am not lost.

I look behind:
The Familiar and beaten path.
I look ahead:
The Unfamiliar.
Success.

Sigh, my busy week finally ended with an all-nighter on Thursday Night, and crashing for 48 hours immediately after.
My neglected blog needs some new content – and I have two perfect items. The first is some eclectic paintings done by Gina King. Her “fantasy pin-up” art is one of a kind. It is a conglomeration of the 1940′s Pin Up Girls meets Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas” – and she has pulled it off magnificently. She refers to her own art as “erotica”. And I agree. Here are my four favorite.  Enjoy!!!

Work, work, work! That has been my week – and it is, unfortunately spilling into my weekend. I have a deadline – but my poor little blog has been neglected. So I am taking a break – and thought a quick and easy piece of content to share would be some art from one of my favorite “fantasy” artists – Luis Royo. I have already shared my favorite piece, Caress. I have many of his paintings on digital form on my computer – and picking just five was very difficult – but here they are to make a gallery for this blog. Enjoy!
