Day 3 of Walking to Work – Snow

2010 February 4

Last night I let the dogs out – and saw a blanket of snow in my backyard.  I went to bed wondering if I would be able to walk to work today or not.  When I awoke this morning – I have to admit that I stayed in bed 10 minutes longer than I should have – anticipating that I would drive to work.  But as soon as I got out of bed – I wanted to walk to work. :)   So I quickly dressed and hit the pavement.  “Gopher Alley” was absolutely gorgeous this morning, and I wish I would have grabbed my camera on the way out the door.  And I obviously wasn’t the only one walking this morning.  Gopher Alley had tracks – footprints of a person with a dog companion.  It made me smile to see that a dedicated dog owner had woken up early and had taken their doggy pal out on such a nice walk.  A few things that I have been noticing:

1) Last night I fell asleep easier than ever before.

2) I woke up quicker and easier this morning.

Soccer News – January 7, 2010: Americans Footing on Foreign Soil

2010 January 7
Landon Donovan

Landon Donovan

There is a lot going on in soccer!  Beckham made his first appearances for AC Milan.  He looked very well as AC Milan win 5-2 against Genoa.  He certainly looks like himself in midfield, plus up front where he started the game.  On the other hand, Donovan revealed he will be wearing number 9 at Everton.  He shouldn’t be too out of shape, being that the MLS has been out of season for over a month now.  Once he gets in training, he should be fine to get fit.

Both Americans, Freddy Adu, 20, and Eddie Johnson, 25, have signed to Aris FC in the Greek league.  Located in a port town of Thessaloniki near the Aegean Sea. This club has been looking for international talent -  having recently signed a Brazilian coach and a hand full of other international players.  Johnson signed a day before Adu did and both come on loans from their original teams.  Johnson will be on loan from England’s Fulham through June and Adu will be on loan from Portugal’s Benfica till June 2011, with options to buy when the loans are up.

There is good news for another American soccer player.  Portuguese club Sporting Braga has acquired US International under 20 midfielder Gale Agbossoumonde, 18. He has been over there since after christmas and has made a big impression on the second team.  Rumors say that he might be able to make appearances on the first team. This is good news for an upcoming star on the US International level, but he might not make an impact until 2014.

In the English Premier League, Manchester City has recorded the biggest loss for a football club in English history.  Man City lost 92.6 million pounds, 133.3 million dollars, in revenue last year, despite their 100 million plus spending spree over the summer.  Us Americans thought that we spent a lot of money on our sports.  The down side in the EPL is Portsmouth.  Having been on the verge of bankruptcy and looking for a new owner, the players were barely payed their December wages on January 7.  Ali al-Faraj, the new owner, has been able to pay the players.  The question is whether the players are that into the team game or not?

CAN 2010 LogoStarting Sunday, all eyes will be on Africa.  The African Cup of Nations starts, held in Angola, and goes till the end of January. This will be an opportunity to see how well the African teams really are.  Sixteen teams have qualified.  The US will be keeping all eyes on Algeria as they will be our last game in group action in June.

Colorado Sports Update – January 7, 2010

2010 January 7

Mike ShanahanIt’s official, Shanahan is the new coach of the Washington Redskins – signing for 5 years at 7 million a year. Plus, he has also hired his son as the offensive coordinator. This comes in routine, as the Redskins have had three head coaches in three seasons. The Chicago Bears have kept their head coach, Smith, but fired five defensive coaches. The NFL is coming to an end of another crazy season that has seen its lows – for players and definitely coaches – as well as high performances that fueled the season. Bret Favre is a great – being named top NFC offensive palyer of the year – but loco in the cabeza. Starting the playoffs on Saturday January 9th is New York at Cincinnati and Philadelphia at Dallas. Sunday rounds out with Baltimore at New England and Green Bay at Arizona.

Gilbert Arenas

Gilbert Arenas

The biggest news in Basketball is another professional athlete having a gun. When will they learn that they don’t have to act tough to get attention? Apparently Washington Wizard’s Gilbert Arenas has been suspended indefinitely by the NBA Commissioner, David Stern. C’mon man!

The Nuggets win 123-122 against Golden State Warriors. J.R. Smith wins by making 2 of 3 free throws with 0.4 secs remaining in the game. Denver amazingly did it without Melo and Billups in the line up. Not only that, Golden State out shoots Denver, making 55% of their field goals. Denver still had a good day making 51% of theirs, but when you out shoot your opponent, aren’t you suppose to win? Martin was the man of the match, with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Nene, 6′ 11″, had 9 points and a thrilling 4 steals! The Nugs now stand at 22-13 over all with there next game against the King, LaBron James and Cleveland.

Colorado AvalancheThe Avs lost Wednesday night 3-2 in a close game at the end. The Avs play their next two games on the road – Friday at Carolina and Saturday at Buffalo.

US Soccer: World Cup 2010 Hopefuls

2010 January 6

World Cup 2010 LogoHere we go! The United States looks like they can do very well in South Africa in June. The hardest game will be the premier with England on June 12th. This will be a reporters delight, swanky grocery isle make a buck and fuck who ever they exploit, being that US’s poster boy of soccer and the once captain of the country that created the Beautiful Game, Landon Donovan and David Beckham are now teammates and will be the most talked about players for their countries. They will see each other on the field, if and only if Capello, England’s coach, will call up the most capped player that England has ever had. Beckham now older, 34, will be competing to get his spot on the team. He has to out do younger and truly faster players like Theo Walcott, Ashley Young, and the dangerous Shaun Wright-Phillips. Capello has given David the hope he needs by saying that if he is fit to play he will be greatly looked at. Then the US plays Slovenia on the 18th and Algeria on the 23rd. Since the Americans have never played Slovenia and Algeria, Coach Bob Bradley will have to do a little research to take a closer look at Slovenia and the “desert foxes.” The desert foxes qualified by defeating the heavy favorites, Egypt. So they have already proven they can be a surprise. On the other hand, Slovania is a fairly new country and doesn’t have much of a past and reputation on the world stage, but from what they have done so far to be in this competition, they have the US’ attention.

The Beautiful Game has seen many Americans succeed in Europe. The only exception is Donovan. Now with the MLS out of season, Donovan will be going to England on loan to play with US #1 goalie, Tim Howard, and Everton. Hopefully he will have a better campaign in England than he did in Germany in years past. Howard is one of the best keepers in the world and is known very well for his ability to stop anything. Not only is Howard a good keeper, US amazingly has multiple goalies playing in England. There is Aston Villa’s Brad Friedel, once a number one keeper for the US team, now 40, is older but still has the experience. Brad Guzan is the second choice for Aston Villa, backing Friedel and then again backing Howard on the US team. Wolverhampton Wolves stars Marcus Hahnemann in net, who has recently taken control as the #1 keeper at Wolverhampton. In the English Premier League, out of four American goalies three of them are starters for their team.

As we speak, the US is in a training camp. Most of the roster is made up of players from the MLS and the Scandinavian leagues that are on winter break. Go to ussoccer.com to see the roster that is there. All these players are trying to improve their chances to make the US roster going to the World Cup. There are the regulars that are not there right now, either they are almost guaranteed a spot or their clubs have not released them to attend the camp. Among them that are not there are all the keepers not mentioned above, Landon Donovan, Oguchi Onyewo (injury), Charlie Davies(injury), Jonathan Spector, Carlos Bocanegra, Michael Bradley, and Clint Dempsey. All of these players are a big importance for the US team and are likely to go if healthy. Onyewo and Davies have serious injuries and might not be able to recover before June. A few others are having difficulty getting starts at their club teams. This includes DaMarcus Beasley, Jozy Altidore, Eddie Johnson, Feddy Adu, and Merice Edu just to name a few.

For the US to have confidence and reach the next round, they will need all their players to get playing time where they are now and be able to stay healthy for the next couple of months.

Denver Broncos LogoAs the NFL 2009-10 regular season ends, the Broncos look as down and out as they did at this very same time last season, another season ending at their own hands. Then to make things worse for McD and company, who went 6-0, then for the final ten games went 2-8 to miss the playoffs for four consecutive seasons, Marshall is up for free agency and is likely to move on and leave the Mile High City behind. Rumor also has it that Shannahan, former coach of the broncos for 14 years - who took them to two, back to back, Superbowls – might make his new home in the D.C. area. Zorn was sacked by the Redskins the day after the season’s ending game. The only team from the AFC West to go to make the playoffs were the San Diego Chargers.

Denver Nuggets LogoDenver Nuggets also lost in a disappointing game on Sunday night. Stocking the fire of frustration, was once team mate Allen Iverson, now back with the team that made him what he is today, the Philadelphia 76ers. The loss came to the Nuggets without the support of the two most important players on the team. Carmelo Anthony was out with a bruised knee and Chauncey Billups was out with a groin strain. To add salt to injury, the most recognizable player in the NBA for his swats with a pinch of white trash, is Chris Anderson whom sprained his ankle in the second quarter and left the game. The up side to this is that it helped other players like Nene to become the Nugget’s top scorer with 24 points and 15 rebounds, Ty Lawson with 23 points and 9 assists, Martin with 17 points and 9 rebounds. This leaves the Nuggets at 21-13 so far in the season – second in their division and 5th in their conference.

Colorado Avalanche LogoThe Avs have really made a good start of the season giving the majority of the credit to their main goalie Anderson. They are now 24-13 for the season and on top of their division. Paul Stastny leads the Avalanche with 40 points, 9 goals and 31 assists. On point, Stastny was also called up to represent the US Hockey Team in the up coming Olympics. Avs take on the New York Islanders on Jan. 6th

Response to “Money for Monogomy”: Infidelity and Wealth

2009 December 15

For the past few days – I have been trying to articulate my own responses to Tiger Woods’ infidelities. Tonight I stumbled upon a very thoughtful blog piece written about Woods’ infidelities from an “economic sociology” perspective that I would like to directly address here.

I stumbled upon the article Money for Monogamy (written by Brooke Harrington on her blog, Economic Sociology) while looking for articles or statistics about marriage and infidelity in different Socioeconomic classes. The article posed questions regarding prenuptial clauses regarding payments to a spouse in the case of the other spouse cheating. The two questions posed were “What are these payments supposed to mean to the wronged spouse?” and “Do financial penalties deter infidelity?” These questions deal with a couple that would have considered their beliefs about infidelity in the marriage and what that would mean to them prior to marrying. Couples that would do this would seem to be two rational individuals that married with prior agreements and conditions as to how the relationship would proceed and remain intact. Wouldn’t that be wonderful if we could do that?! I think the divorce rate would be much lower if each couple really thought out what issues were important to them prior to marriage, and laid out the rules for those issues.

However, as Brooke points out, “humans are boundedly rational” – that is that even though our intentions may be to make logical decisions, weighing out the pros and the cons of the consequences of that decision, we are limited in our ability to do that. In the case of many human relationships – especially marriage – I believe that most people enter marriage without a lot of prior thought about what occurrences in the marriage would make them want to leave it. And perhaps most people go into it believing that their marriage will be “happily ever after.” Also maybe for most, decisions to marry and stay in a marriage are primarily based on societal and cultural upbringing and pressures (and perhaps “cultural value” and “societal values” can be thought of as a substitute for “monetary value” in this case.)

So the questions that Brooke posed are not the questions for which I seek an answer:

But that just raises another set of questions, like: why would you want to marry on those terms? When one spouse seems so likely to cheat that it’s necessary to have a ‘bad boy clause’ in the pre-nup, and the other spouse spells out how s/he plans to exact retribution for any infidelity, I have to wonder why the couple are bothering to marry in the first place. The whole arrangement just has ‘train wreck’ written all over it.

Because the marriage described above sounds like two mature adults going into a relationship with no blinders – which sounds like the making of a successful partnership. The question that I have is “Which societal and economic pressures make someone stay in a marriage if they know their partner has extramarital relationships?” That seems to be the more likely case than a case where couples have a pre-nup agreement that handles instances of infidelity.

To put some context to this question, let me explain my interest in infidelities by men of power, wealth, and in the upper socioeconomic class. I am currently editing a novel based on a recent affair of Gregg Gordon (president and CEO of the Social Science Research Network) with a former employee (who was an employee of SSRN at the time of the affair.) Strip clubs, and other “transactional” exchanges with women are commonplace among particular groups of businessmen while on their business trips. They know of the others’ indiscretions – and keep those incidents sacred among themselves. However, I am at a loss for understanding how their spouses could be totally clueless to the activities of their husbands while on business trips.

This leads me to a hypothesis that I have formed:

Females from a high socioeconomic class base decisions to divorce or not to divorce on monetary economics more than females from a lower socioeconomic class.

I would be greatly interested on any studies or papers written about this particular issue. Also, I am interested in my readers’ responses to this – good or bad.

Shut It Down – Pitbull ft Akon (Music Video)

by razor

At the end of October, I posted Pitbull’s song, Shut It Down without a video. At that point it did not have an official video, but I enjoy the song so much that I wanted to post it. Since then – the official video has been released. So here it is – Enjoy!

It’s my life; I’m gonna do what I do -
